We all need a boost of energy during the workday, and there’s no better way to get it than with healthy snacks. So put down the chips and switch to healthier options that will keep your body energized and boost your metabolism.
Since most vending machines aren’t filled with nutritious foods, the best thing you can do is plan ahead. “The more you can bring from home, the better,” said Stephen Compston, Registered Dietitian with Renown Health Management.
Healthy Snack Options
Some of the easiest snacks to bring to work are fruits. Apples, oranges, peaches, and berries generally don’t require any prep work, so they are the perfect grab-and-go snack. Fruits are low in calories but high in fiber and vitamins, which means they will keep you full longer.
Veggies are another simple snack to take to work, but they may require just a little more preparation. A few stalks of celery paired with natural peanut butter will give your body the fiber and protein to boost your energy. If celery is not your taste, try baby carrots, broccoli, mini bell peppers, or some cauliflower to keep your body fueled.
If your cravings are more on the salty side, try munching on a handful of almonds. “Nuts have a lot of calories, but the calories are coming from healthy fats and fiber and protein, so they help sustain you for a long amount of time,” said Compston.
It’s easy to get carried away when snacking, especially if you’re sitting at a desk all day. So balance is key when it comes to proper portion sizes. One rule that Compston follows is that “if you are ‘full’ and not satisfied after a snack, you over snacked.” But, he says, Make sure you aren’t skipping snacks either, as this often leads to overeating at meals.
